Caudal began with a nail-art business. While fitting press-on nails, Elsa — a high school student and Girls Who Code alumna — developed an imaging technique to measure a hand precisely from a photo. She realized the same idea could solve a problem anglers know well: measuring a fish quickly and accurately so it can get back in the water fast.

With her brother Ian, an engineering student at Duke, Elsa adapted that technique for fish. The result is Caudal — a patent-pending, computer-vision method that turns your calibrated hand into a ruler, so you can measure your catch from an ordinary photo. No tape, no measuring board.
